Why You Should Start Buying Second-Hand

Buying second-hand is a great way to live sustainably.

When thinking about a social issue that I could impact or change, I feel very passionate about the issue concerning fast fashion’s impact on the environment. As we are now in an age where consumerism is increasing and has reached new heights, it is very easy to get caught up with the idea of wanting more faster and in a more accessible way. To many, this new world of consumerism that seems easy and accessible, actually has a horrible impact on the environment. Media playing a big part in trends and fast fashion in today’s world has helped contribute to the ever so growing issue. New trends that are constantly coming and going every season, faster than we have ever seen before, and big fashion houses producing and showing collections making consumers feel out of date, wanting new and more of everything, are part of the problem. To keep up with these trends, companies are making goods more accessible to everyone, by making more products poorly made at a lower price. This leads to clothing going to waste when the trend is over and the poorly made products falling apart. Thankfully, many more are becoming more aware of these issues and are doing their part. By buying second, doing research on how products are made, and investing in well made items, consumers can help stop the heavy impact that fast fashion has on the environment.

About a year ago, I personally stopped buying from places like Zara and Revolve after learning about the impact fast fashion has on the environment and how wasteful it really is. After deciding to stop shopping at these places and becoming more aware of what I am purchasing, I feel that when I shop now at places like The RealReal and ThredUp, I am shopping more ethically and in a more sustainable way. Becoming more aware about the piece you are buying will help you create a wardrobe that will last you forever and will never go out of style.
