Gucci Reinvention
February 9, 2023
In November of 2022, Alessandro Michele and Gucci abruptly decided to part ways. After seven years of being creative director of the brand Gucci and working there since 2002, Alessandro stepped down. Born in Rome, the 50- year-old designer is known for his maximalist designs and reviving Gucci’s Geek-Chic aesthetic.
Currently at Gucci, they are trying to take a more timeless approach to their collections, like what Louis Vutttion and Hermes have been doing. This is very different from Alessandro Michele’s approach to his collections, where he presented extravagant and iconic collections every season. Even though he quadrupled the brands revenue to 10 billion dollars, this new approach to their collections moving forward is a good way for the brand to become less involved with trends and take a more timeless approach. Michele’s departure from the brand is yet another example of how fashion is always changing, reinventing and constantly producing the new.
Now Gucci has appointed a new creative director, Sabato de Sarno, who has been behind the season all of his career. He was previously the men and women fashion director at Valentino and helped Pierpaolo, the creative director, with ready-to-wear collections. He helped steer Valentino’s ready-to-wear collections in a more commercial direction.
Gucci’s Fall-Winter 2023 Mens Wear Collection was released in January and the reviews and feedback are not positive, with Vogue calling it ‘disastrous’ and saying ‘people will remember it for what it wasnt, rather than what it was’. The collection showed white T-shirts with oversized chino pants, an ‘Ivy League paradigm’. During the middle of the runway, the collection began to present jackets featuring 1953 Florence-Rome-Milan-New York, on them. Gucci called the collection a “reflection of the individualities represented by the multifaceted creatives and craftsmen who inhabit the house of Gucci.” The world is waiting to see the direction and where Gucci goes in the future.
