Sports Flash Beginning of April
April 3, 2023
Hello ILS Family,
Here is your Sports Flash and up coming sports schedule before and during the Easter break.
Baseball: The ILS Varsity Baseball Team went 2-0 this past week, advancing to an overall record of 9-5 and currently tied for the best record in the District. On Monday, the Royal Lions defeated Miami Brito by a final score of 6-4. With a huge late inning surge, the Royal Lions were able to tack on 6 runs at the bottom of the 6th inning leaving them 3 outs away from victory. Senior Jonathan Rivero closed out the game on the mound by striking out the side and by also smacking a 2-run double in the 6th inning to give the Royals the lead and comeback win.
Wednesday the Boys traveled down to Marathon for a 4 pm first pitch vs the Dolphins. The Royal Lions won the game by a final score of 5-3. Freshman Brandon Nuñez dominated in his first outing of the year throwing 5 innings while allowing zero earned runs. The offense was led by senior Luis Peñate who went 3-3 with an RBI double and 2 stolen bases.
The Royal Lions have 1 game this week, Monday @ North Miami Beach 3:30pm first pitch.
Tennis: On Thursday the Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis team made the day long outing to Key West for the reverse fixture. After getting wins for both the Boys and Girls at our home match, an away win was definitely within reach. The Boys came out strong with solid wins in the singles. Ginamarco Punzo getting an 8-2 win in the #1 spot, Josh Hernandes getting an 8-0 win the #2 spot, Simon Munera winning 8-1, Vigo Anduix winning 8-0, and Elio Gonzalez winning 8-1 in the #5 spot. Boys also got solid wins in the doubles to come away with a 7-0 win.
The Girls had a harder time. Isabelle Rojas continued to roll through the season adding another win with an 8-2 victory. Valeria Macinerias played up in the number 2 spot coming up against a much tougher opponent. Agatha Morrison got a great win at the #3 spot 8-3, Natalia Heller fell 8-1 at the #4 spot and Francesca Abdo got a great win in the #5 spot. Unfortunately, the Girls lost both the doubles which meant they lost the match 4-3 overall.
On Monday the Girls play host to Lourdes for their Senior Night and the boys play Ransom’s B team for their Senior Night.
Softball: Royal Lions notched its fifth win over Colonial Christian 14-4 behind the one hit, 14 strike out performance of Captain and starting pitcher Emilie Escobar. She also helped her cause with two hits, and two RBI’s. Junior Captain, Jasmine Finley had three hits, with three runs scored and three RBI’s. Ashley Fonseca also had an awesome game, notching the team’s first home run of the season! She finished with three hits in the game and four RBI’s! Senior Captain Miriam Gonzalez had a key double that brought in three runs, and her sister Daysi Gonzalez caught a stellar game, and also scored once, off two hits with an RBI!
Sailing: The Immaculata-La Salle Sailing Team competed in the last of SAISA’s regatta series for the season, South Points #7 held at the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County in Vero Beah, Fl., on Saturday, April 1st, 2023. ILS Sailing Varsity and Junior Varsity both sailed in this event. Varsity competed against 13 other high schools and JV against 9. The conditions were tricky with shifty winds between 7 and 14 knots throughout the day. Sailors sailed 2 sets of 3 races in each division.
JV WON SP7 as the team was thrilled because it was a tight race with Ransom Everglades for first place. Though JV finished with the same number of points as Ransom, this time unlike last week, ILS had more 1st place finishes, and therefore finished on top. Congratulations to Keith Grupenhoff, skipper for Division A, and his crew Marco Andres and to Division B skipper Isabella Heinrich and crews Sebastian Loughlin and Nathalie Caudron on their overall win and specifically for their three #1 finish for Division A and two for Division B.
ILS Varsity has officially qualified for Districts 2023 which will be held in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, at the end of April. Though they had a tough race day and finished in 8th place overall, they are thrilled to go back to Districts, and it is a great testament of the team’s talent. Danny Riano skippered A with Holland Ramos and Jadin Gonzalez as crew. For Division B, skippering was Umi Noritake with Soleil Aurignac crewing.

Sports Flash as Classes Resume
Greetings, ILS Family.
Here is your Sports Flash as classes resume.
Tennis: This past Thursday and Friday the Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis participated at their district tournament. After two years of great success, both teams looked to continue to their run. At the end of the two days, both boys and girls came in third place, thus missing out on moving forward to regionals. However, over the course of the two days there were some great performances.
Girls: Isabella Rojas again made it to the final of the number 1 position, losing out to the Gulliver number 1 in the final and ending her two-year run of being the district champion. This would be Isabella’s last match for La Salle as she graduated this year and will take her talents to Madrid. Multiple trips to the state championship and recognition as All-Team Dade two years in a row just shows the impact that she has had on the Tennis team.
The rest of the girls also had a great run at districts with everyone making the semi-finals before losing to either Gulliver or MAST, the eventual winner and runners-up of the district tournament. Thank you to all the girls who showed up over their spring break, Valeria Macineiras, Agatha Morrison and Sofia Andux.
Boys: Overall, the boys also had a great tournament, with everyone making the semi-finals in their own spot. Alvaro Casto Mendvil and Patricio Ureta both made it to the final of the bracket. Alvaro had a great win over Gulliver in the semifinal while Patricio made it to the final without losing a single point, which is an incredible achievement.
The best match of the tournament has to go to our number 1 boys double team of Gianmarco Punzo (#1) and Simon Munera (#3) who made life very hard for the Gulliver number 1 team and had a chance to win the match, but unfortunately couldn’t quite make it over the line and lost 9-7. For not having played with each other during the actual season, this was a great match to watch with some incredible tennis.
A huge thanks to everyone involved in making this tennis season a success. Thank you to all the seniors: Gianmarco Punzo, Elio Gonzales, Isabella Rojas and Natalia Heller for their dedication to the team and their overall success on the team.
