As the sun rose April 22nd, 2024, it cast its golden light on a planet facing unprecedented environmental challenges. From the melting polar ice caps to the devastating wildfires raging across continents, the signs of a planet in distress were impossible to ignore.

Earth Day, which is always celebrated April 22,  served as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. Across continents, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to recognize the beauty of the planet and to advocate for its preservation.

“I enjoy Earth Day because it keeps everyone reminded that we should protect the earth and care for it,” said sophmore Andrea Echeverría.

Students and faculty at ILS really care about the environment, especially Mrs. Cecilia Calleros, the environmental science teacher. She always loves to participate in cleanups and do anything she can to preserve the planet.

“Earth Day encourages individuals, communities, and governments to take action to conserve natural resources, reduce waste, and adopt sustainable practices. It promotes initiatives like recycling, energy conservation, and the protection of endangered species and habitats,” said Junior Javiera Escobar

Earth Day Fun Facts

-The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, having been organized by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin to raise awareness about environmental issues.

-The Earth Day Network launched the “Billion Acts of Green” campaign in 2010 with the goal of collecting one billion environmentally friendly actions. The campaign exceeded its goal, showcasing global commitment to sustainability.

-Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries around the world, making it one of the largest secular observances globally.

-In recent years, Earth Day has increasingly embraced digital platforms to reach a wider audience. Online events, social media campaigns, and digital activism play a significant role in raising awareness and promoting environmental action.

“My family and I care about the environment a lot.  It’s one of the most important days for us, even when I was little. Im glad ILS loves and cares about Earth Day,” said sophomore Marcella Guerra.

Earth Day continues to inspire environmental activism and positive change, serving as an annual reminder of the importance of protecting the planet for future generations.
