Here is your Sailing Regatta report from the weekend’s regatta in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.
SAISA South Points #1, the first of the 7 regattas on the Varsity team schedule, took place this past Saturday. Due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, several schools from the west coast of Florida were unable to attend, and therefore SAISA has ruled that this regatta will not count in the overall standings. ILS once again fielded a Varsity squad and two Junior Varsity teams, and with six different students skippering and six crewing. Overall, our team is continuing our tradition of competitive sailing, with highly skilled and experienced sailors throughout the roster.
The regatta took place at Holland Park in Hollywood on “North Lake”, a basin on the intercoastal waterway. The sailing conditions were challenging, with light, shifty winds throughout the day. Our Varsity team had a solid regatta finishing 4th overall out of 15 teams. Skippering for Division A was senior Keith Grupenhoff with senior Soleil Aurignac as crew. Division B had junior Bella Henrich as skipper with Sophomore Alejandro Escudero as crew.
Both JV teams had a fantastic first regatta finishing in 2nd and 3rd place respectively out of 8 teams.
JV Team #1 Division A featured sophomore Mateo Coates as skipper with senior Lucia Martinez Moure as crew; Leo Terzani skippered the B Division, with sophomore Kristian Gutierrez as crew. JV Team #2 Division A had sophomore Beck Brill as skipper and senior Nathalie Caudron as crew, with Marina Wardlaw skippering B Division with freshman Gabi Mascarenhas as crew.
