Football:
“Battle of the Bay”: ILS 43 – Ransom 31
Keep the trophy at home. That was the theme all week long. ILS football alumni had been waiting since 2016 to get Ransom back on the schedule. Being grouped together in District play finally renewed this long-time rivalry. It also became an important matchup for playoff rankings. Being the biggest game in town on Thursday night, as well as both teams having a lot of buzz around them led to a packed house with tons of media presence. It was the Royals who proved ready for the test as they turned out big plays all night long.
Tyrone Williams ran back the game’s opening kickoff to set the tone for the night. Ransom kept it close with a long scoring drive on their 1st possession. The Royals punted on their 2ndpossession, and costly penalties gave Ransom a short field. They scored again and went up 14-6. On the 3rd possession the Raiders defense held strong. A huge fake punt conversion by Keondre Ponton kept the drive alive, and Terrence Smith Jr. scored his 1st of 3 rushing touchdowns on the night.
Ransom was able to capitalize on an errant throw from Mallary, and their interception led to another Raider TD. Again, the offense wasn’t fazed, and a huge pass to Tyrone Williams led to a Brandon Kinsey TD reception as time ran out in the half with the score tied 21-21.
Ransom played hard in the 1st half, but the Royals came out and showed why they are the 2nd ranked team in the Region heading into the playoffs. The opening drive of the 2nd half saw a big catch again from Williams, who finished with 89 yards on the night. Terrence Smith Jr. followed that with his 2nd TD on a 30-yard run which he broke several tackles. The 2pt conversion pass was caught by Joel Salien putting the Royals up 29-21.
Ransom came back with a FG on their next drive. This is where we really felt the Royals defense clamping down on their opponent. The play of the night came on the next drive, as Terrence Smith Jr. hit the spin button 3 times, that’s 3 spin moves, as be burst for a 60-yard TD and one of the greatest runs I have ever seen. One more TD run by Mallary gave the Royals plenty of cushion to end the game with ease and secure the 2nd seed heading into the postseason.
Standout Performances:
Dorian Mallary: Passing – 11 for 15, 141 yards, 1 TD. Rushing – 5 rushes, 54 yards, 1 TD.
Tyrone Williams: 67-yard KOR TD, 5 catches for 89 yards, 156 all-purpose yards.
Terrence Smith Jr.: 11 rushes, 135 yards, 3 TDs.
Brandon Kinsey: 4 catches, 35 yards, 1 TD.
Keondre Ponton: 12 tackles.
Jayden Noel: 11 tackles.
