UFOs and Congress? Let’s Talk About It

Congress meeting held discussing the mysterious video and its origins

A mysterious video recently surfaced showing a “white orb” in the waters 20 miles off the coast of Kuwait, sparking a wave of speculation. What makes this footage even more interesting is that it was found on the U.S. Department of Defense’s own network. The sighting quickly gained many people’s attention prompting Congress to hold a hearing to investigate and explain the sighting. The hearing became part of Congress’ continuous efforts to give more information about what is known and what isn’t know about UAPs.

According to the Air Force Declassification Office, Unidentified flying object (commonly abbreviated as UFO or U.F.O.) is the popular term for any apparent aerial phenomenon whose cause cannot be easily or immediately identified by the observer. The United States Air Force, which coined the term in 1952, initially defined UFOs as those objects that remain unidentified after scrutiny by expert investigators, though today the term UFO is colloquially used to refer to any unidentifiable sighting regardless of whether it has been investigated. UFO reports increased precipitously after the first widely publicized U.S. sighting, reported by private pilot Kenneth Arnold in June 24 1947, that gave rise to the popular terms “flying saucer” and “flying disc.” The term UFO is popularly taken as a synonym for alien spacecraft and generally most discussions of UFOs revolve around this presumption. UFO enthusiasts and devotees have created organizations, religious cults have adopted extraterrestrial themes, and in general the UFO concept has evolved into a prominent mythos in modern culture. Some investigators now prefer to use the broader term unidentified aerial phenomenon (or UAP), to avoid the confusion and speculative associations that have become attached to UFO. Another widely known acronym for UFO in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian is OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado, with variant regional spellings).

“While I was on social media the other day, I came across parts of the video being discussed and I took some interest in it. It really shocked me that the orbs were said to be able to move faster than US submarines,” Sshared sophomore Maria Nordholz.

Michael Shellenberger, founder of Public New Service, revealed that the thirteen-minute video was captured from a helicopter. Halfway through the footage, the white orb is joined by a second orb. The mysterious second orb moved with high speed, darting into the frame and out. According to representatives during the Congressional hearing, the objects were able to travel with more speed underwater than US submarines and could endure immense forces without damage. This information has only deepened the intrigue surrounding the footage.

“I think that it is really weird that the video was found on the U.S Department of Defense network. It makes it seem more real.  When I watched the Congressional meeting, they seemed to explain it, but also add more information. That made me understand everything,” stated sophomore Maria Alonso.
