Something disturbing washed up on the shores of Key Biscayne.
“I find it so ridiculous and stupid that people are associating this incident as something from Dexter and that people are making TikTok videos out of this,” said junior Marc Lee.
Lee was referring to the popular series Dexter which focuses on its main character, a serial killer who works in forensic criminology by day, and is a serial killer by night, living on Miami Beach.
But this case was no Dexter. Sadly, police investigators uncovered that the remains found ashore to 19- year-old Victor Enrique Castaneda Jr.
It is highly likely that he was swept up in a rip current.
What led up to it this tragic event was that Castaneda and his sister were struggling in the water on Miami Beach by South Pointe until a witness saw and chose to save his younger sister first.
“I find it so sad that something like this can happen to someone so young and the major psychological impact it might leave on his sister and family that comes along with this whole mess,” said sophomore Michael Tirador.
After he saving the sister, the good Samaritan could not find Victor Castaneda who was then promptly reported missing.
“I find it terrifying that something like this can happen so close by to where I live and we still do not know what really happened,” said sophomore Trace Wyche.
Helicopters and some boats were brought out to search for him with no luck.
WHAT IS A RIP CURRENT?
Defined as, “a strong, narrow, fast-moving channel of water that flows away from the shore,” rip currents can be deadly.
HOW CAN YOU SURVIVE A RIP CURRENT?
Stay afloat, yell for help, swim parallel to the shore. Do not exhaust yourself fighting the current.
This accident can be used as a reminder to cherish the time on Earth with family and friends, and serve as to highlight for everyone the importance of swimming safety.
