Disney parks are known for their fun-filled and magic experiences as places where families get together to cherish some amazing memories. But not all the time is it fun and games. Not all stories have the fun magical ending that visitors desire. Behind the rides, parades, and attractions, unfortunate incidents highlight the importance of health and safety, reminding annual pass holder and other Disney fans that sometimes the thrill of the experience comes with inherent risk
Many of the rides at Disney World have signs posted about health risks for guest safety.
Space Mountain, a ride located in the Tomorrowland section of Magic Kingdom, is a high-speed rollercoaster that simulates a thrilling journey through space. There is a sign posted that warns guests with neck, back, or heart conditions to avoid the ride. Yet, every year, some visitors ignore these warnings, eager for an adrenaline rush.
In one case, a man with a history of back issues decided to ride Space Mountain. When the ride started, its twisting and turning motions placed a strain on his back. This caused his back to lock in place, leaving him unable to move. He was rushed to the park’s first-aid station and later transferred to a hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had sustained a serious injury. This incident reminds visitors to listen to their bodies and take health warnings seriously, especially in a high-intensity environment like Disney World.
While on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a ride known for its sharp curves and sudden drops, a woman with neck problems ignored the warning and went on the ride. In doing so, this left her with a severe neck injury. She needed to seek medical attention immediately. While the experience was meant to be thrilling, it ended with a reminder that health risks should never be overlooked. Tourists go to the parks to have fun, not to sit in a hospital bed in pain.
“If you see a safety sign and have back issues or neck issues and purposely go on rides regardless then your making the ride itself unenjoyable. Not only that but they would need to stop the rides making wait times longer and makes Disney not a magical place.” Said senior Gianna Ferrara.
However, perhaps one of the most tragic incidents occurred at Disney Springs, the shopping and dining district of Disney World. A woman with a known peanut allergy ate a dish that contained peanuts. Before this, the woman made it extremely clear in informing the staff of her allergy. The staff then ensured that there would be no peanuts in her dish. Within moments, she began experiencing symptoms of anaphylactic shock, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Despite the quick response from Disney’s medical staff, the woman passed away from the reaction. This incident reminds everyone of the importance of clear communication and vigilance, especially when it comes to severe allergies.
“Disney’s magic is meant to be experienced, but not at the cost of our safety,” said senior Isabella Rosenberger.
These stories are true reminders that while Disney World is a place for fun and excitement, it is important to prioritize health and well being. Those safety signs are posted to ensure safety, and to make sure visitors derive the best possible experience in the happiest place on the planet. Whether it’s a thrilling ride or a delicious meal, taking the necessary precautions can make all the difference between a memorable experience and a life-altering disaster.
“While I don’t go to Disney often, I constantly am hearing these stories about people and I believe that people should be less ignorant when it comes to health decisions,” said senior Rachel Larralde.
So, the next time you step into the magic of Disney, remember that safety comes first. It’s the best way to ensure you have a magical time with your family, creating unforgettable memories to look back on.
