Galentine’s Day, made famous by the character Leslie Knope from the TV show Parks and Recreation, has become a favorite holiday for many. Played by Amy Poehler, Leslie Knope created the holiday to celebrate female friendships, and it’s grown into much more. “It’s the best excuse to hang out with your besties and just have a good time. My friends and I just did a Galentine’s, and I had the greatest time,” said junior Bryanna Alvarez.

The ways to celebrate are endless. Some go for a classic brunch, just like in the show, while others do movie nights, DIY spa days, or even a cute little gift exchange. In recent years, themed parties or crafting personalized cards for your friends have also become popular ways to celebrate the holiday.

“My friends and I always go for a full-on self-care night. We eat food and then do face masks and watch shows,” said junior Senna Trafton.

But Galentine’s Day isn’t just about the fun. It’s also about appreciating the amazing friendships that keep us going. Studies show that strong friendships can boost mental health and happiness, making this day not only an enjoyable one but also beneficial to well-being. In fact, research suggests that close friends can help lower stress, improve heart health, and even increase lifespan. So, it’s definitely worth celebrating with friends.

“Friendships are just as important as relationships. I’m in a relationship myself, but I’ve always made sure to celebrate with my girls. Galentine’s Day is a reminder to appreciate the people who are always there for you,” said senior Javiera Escobar.

Whether it’s a fancy outing or a cozy night in, Galentine’s Day is all about lifting each other up, strengthening bonds, and having a good time. It’s a reminder that love comes in many forms, and friendship is one of the strongest kinds.
