L.I.N.K (Learning About Inclusion & Nurturing with Kindness) has been spreading throughout high schools, with the chapter founded at Christopher Columbus, then expanding to Carrollton, and finally reaching Immaculata-La Salle.
The LINK at ILS chapter opened during the 2024-2025 school year. LINK has become all about creating a welcoming environment for individuals with special needs, building a community where kindness, understanding, and support come first.
“LINK’s mission is to promote awareness, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with special needs. We believe in creating a world where everyone is valued for who they are, and kindness is at the heart of everything we do,” said club president, senior Martina Ottolino.
LINK at ILS is proud to collaborate with schools such as Miami Learning Experience and non-profit organizations such as the Down Syndrome Association of Miami, to spread this message and drive meaningful change through events like the Special Olympics, Miracle Walk, and more. Together, they are fostering a culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
The LINK Club recently hosted the Special Olympics, an event that turned the school’s athletic field into a hub of energy, excitement, and camaraderie. High school seniors and individuals with special needs came together through sports, teamwork, and celebration. The day was packed with activities like basketball, soccer, obstacle courses, and cheerleading, bringing smiles to everyone involved.
“It was freeing to see how everyone was having fun without caring what other people had to say or without judgment. It gave me hope for the fact that we are not as superficial as I thought we were,” said senior Roxana Acosta.
Volunteers from the LINK Club paired up with participants, offering support, encouragement, and genuine friendship. The atmosphere was electric, with students cheering each other on and forming bonds that extended beyond the games.
“It was fulfilling seeing how the kids were enjoying themselves and portraying their special abilities through obstacles. It was really an amazing day,” said senior Abigail Figueredo.
More than just a showcase of athletic talent, the Special Olympics was a testament to the power of inclusion, teamwork, and sportsmanship. By the end of the day, the field was filled with high-fives, laughter, and a shared sense of accomplishment. This event wasn’t just about sports; it was about creating lasting connections, embracing differences, and proving that when ILS comes together, everyone can break barriers toward building a truly inclusive community.
