Pope Leo XIV has newly started his papacy as pope as people all over the world celebrate, especially those in Chicago and Peru.
This pope is the first pope to have been originally born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, provoking the excitement of not only Chicago, but also the entirety of the USA, upon receiving the news of the first American-born Pope.
“He’s a social media celebrity, especially since he’s from Chicago and a Sox fan. But from my bit of research, almost all his views were similar to the former Pope Francis, so I feel that Pope Leo will bring good for the Catholic community” said sophomore Teresa Kurishungal.
However, in his opening he addressed the people in Italian, but what’s interesting is he then started speaking Spanish so he appeared as more of an internationalist or even Latin American than North American.
Peruvians have also been celebrating the news because he spent a couple of decades there as a missionary (where he learned Spanish), became a Peruvian, and even Bishop of Peru. Undeniably, Pope Leo XIV is a devoted companion to the country of Peru.
Americans have been trying to figure out what kind of pope, Pope Leo XIV is, meaning that they are wondering if he is progressive or conservative. However, he does not fit purely into one of those categories; he is mixed between the two.
“I’m not too sure what I think about the new pope. I guess we’ll see how he is in the future. Hopefully, he’s as good as Pope Francis,” said sophomore Fernanda Martinez.
For example, he is more progressive on the side of immigration, due to his past experiences in Peru, and his conservative side upholds the traditional values of the Catholic Church.
Pope Leo XIV attended Villanova University- an Augustinian university and is even a member of the Augustinian order which is a very small order only consisting of 3000 members in which they devote their lives to praying and serving the poor.
