The latest trend to interest fans of energetic and natural beverages is matcha. What exactly is it and what has made it so appealing as well as popular? Unlike regular green tea, matcha offers an earthy and slightly sweet taste. If made right, it should be dark green. When enthusiasts add milk, the matcha turns it into a sage green color. Of course, there are many ways to enjoy this beverage including hot or cold, making it a solidly ideal drink for any season—summer, winter, spring, or fall.
“I’ve always loved matcha even before it started becoming popular like it is now. I like the flavor profile and the health benefits it has are an even better plus. My favorite matcha is the one served at Rosetta Bakery because they add a small bit of vanilla to it making it extra good,” shared sophomore Maria Nordholz.
Matcha not only tastes amazing, but has many health benefits. It helps support overall health since it contains the antioxidant catechin. It is also known to have a high amount of L-theanine, which is an amino acid which aids in relaxation. Even though it has all these benefits, the good can be easily outweighed by the bad if and when matcha drinkers excessively sweeten the beverage. Secondly, potential enthusiasts should consider if they purchased their matcha at a healthy spot to assure they are receiving maximum health benefits.
“No matter where I get my matcha from, I always get it unsweetened and with oat milk. It’s my favorite way to get it, and it’s healthy. If I really want to be healthy I make my own at home,” said sophomore Camila Echeverri.
One of the main reasons Matcha is currently trending on social media is its aesthetic. It has become a part of the “clean girl aesthetic” that focuses on living a healthy lifestyle. Matcha has created many trends such as tutorials on how to make it on the apps TikTok and Instagram. Whether you’re drinking it for the flavor or the aesthetic, it has become a staple in many people’s daily lives.
“Although I don’t drink matcha daily, it’s something that I have incorporated into my week and has become one of my favorite drinks to buy and make,” shared sophomore Sophie Yetming.
