Mr. Jesus Uriarte, World Languages chair, teaches the Portuguese class where sometimes he invites guests to engage in a a video call in order for students to learn through actual members of the field instead of just the textbook. With more students every year signing up for the course, and an increase in the Portuguese-speaking population in Miami, mastering this language has become more important than ever.
“I find it a really easy class if you do all your work and when the classes are like this, it’s more chill and I can learn something for the future,” said sophomore Francisco Cazelato.
At a recent class in particular, Mr. Uriate had Marcus Andrey Vasconcellos. Mr. Vasconcellos is the founder of the National Institute of Science, Technology, and Innovation CO2. This is a Brazilian organization internationally recognized for its work in sustainability solutions, climate research, and technological innovation focused on sustainable development.
Mr. Marcus is a Ph.D. candidate in Innovation and Sustainability, holds a Master’s degree in Regional Development and the Environment, and has a Bachelor’s in Industrial Wood Engineering. He is also a specialist in Occupational Safety Engineering and has been developing high-impact projects in Brazil and abroad, connecting science, technology, and society.
How Can This Course Benefit You?
If you take his class, you can figure out what you want to do with the number of potential careers you learn in his course and how they can be used.
“All you really have to do is pay attention and like write the important stuff down and you can pass easily,” said junior Thomas Amarante.
Learning Portuguese will expand your work-force options with the potential to make international deals or become a translator.
It will also look better on your resume/college applications to know how to speak more than one language. For the many already bilingual Spanish/English speakers at ILS, knowing a third language would be even more impressive for potential employers.
“It was a really fun class,” said junior Victoria Rios.
