As a new school year dawns upon ILS, so does a new year for ILS’ very own Drama Club. This year, the Drama Executive Board hopes to make the club stronger than ever. Their goal is to have a club meeting once a month, allowing members to come and spend time enjoying snacks, learning about new opportunities within the club, and appreciating the art of theater together. Why is the club making a bigger effort this year? The answer is it is a huge year, with three very ambitious shows, and Drama Club needs more help than ever. What are these shows you might ask?

These shows include the play – A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of the story by Charles Dickens, following the miserable character of Ebenezer Scrooge who does not enjoy Christmas, and is eventually visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

The musical – SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical, an adaptation of the Nickelodeon Cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants created by Stephen Hillenburg will also grace the ILS stage.

There will also be the annual student-directed Black Box show, Into The Woods: A Musical Review, this year directed by Senior Sabrina Diaz-Balart, who is also the President of the Thespians Honor Society. She previously co-directed last year’s Black Box show The Lightning Thief.

“This is going to be one of the most ambitious Black Box shows the school has ever done. I’m really excited to get a cast and crew to work together on this project that I’ve been wanting to do since sophomore year and now I get to make it reality,” stated Sabrina.

This is obviously considerable requiring much collaboration which is why the Drama Club will be holding a meeting next Thursday, the 28th. The meeting is open to those already in the club, and anyone who is interested in joining. The Drama Club always needs new members and always makes an effort to have everyone feel included, so everyone is free to come. Drama is one of the biggest clubs at ILS, and is always doing something, so there is never a dull moment. Previous shows by the club include Addams Family, Little Shop of Horrors, Les Miserables, Matilda, and more. After the first Executive Board meeting for the club took place, some of its members shared their feelings about the new year with the Royal Courier.

Senior and Club President Lara Torrens is very pleased with her new leadership role.

“Being president of the Drama Club has always been one of my dreams since I became a student at ILS. Now that I’m finally in this position, I cant wait to see what I can do to help the shows and demonstrate to all of ILS the love the Drama Club has bestowed on me!”

Lara is not the only member who is anticipating a productive year for the Drama Club.

“I think that everything’s going well considering the Board is truly dedicated in making the Drama Club truly shine this year like it has years prior. I’m really excited to have a hand in the blossoming of this club and take it to its true potential,” said senior and Club Secretary Lia Vieiro.

“I’m so excited to welcome in new members and leave a lasting mark on the club,” said senior and Club Vice President, Amy Pichardo.

While other members are just thrilled with a part of a new season.

“So excited especially for all the outreach with all the newbies. It’s definitely going to be a crazy and fun year,” shared senior and Club Treasurer, Dani Rangel.

Make sure to stop by the Black Box after school Thursday the 28th for a short meeting to learn all about Theater here at ILS.
