School spirit has always been an important part of life here at ILS. In the past, students came together with enthusiasm, filling the stands at games and turning events into unforgettable experiences.
However, in recent years, that excitement has faded. Fewer students are attending games and events, and the energy that once brought everyone together seems to be slipping away.
What is the real reason for the rise or the fall of school spirit?
Ivanna Penalver, a sophomore who actively participates in both the SALTT and LINK programs, contributes her time and energy to support school events.
“People are too lazy to go buy decorations and there’s no time to go out, plus with everything being so expensive, it’s hard to get involved. But school spirit is still alive at football games and other events for those who show up,” said Ivanna.
Viole Fausciana, a member of SALTT and star player on her field hockey team agrees.
“People are too lazy to go and buy decorations and there’s no time to go out, but school spirit is still going strong and fun at football games and other events for everyone who does show up.”
Ana Sofia Rincon, a sophomore, is an active member of both the SALTT and Be the Light clubs, helping to promote positivity on campus.
“I think the fall of school spirit is students thinking that showing their school support is not important, but a good thing is the people that do go to football games for example love showing support and love to our school, athletes, band, etc,” she said.
In short, the decline in school spirit at ILS is due to costs, busy schedules, and social hesitation. To bring it back, let’s tackle these issues and find new ways to get students involved. Some also blame the pandemic as across the country, and not just at ILS, community engagement is not at the level it once was.
