F Block in Action: How Students Use Time

Part 2 of 4 – Examining the Impact of F Block

While opinions about F Block vary, how students actually use the time reveals its role in supporting both academic success and student involvement. Across grade levels, F Block functions less as “free time” and more as a flexible resource that students tailor to their individual needs.

For many students, F Block is an extension of the classroom. Mr. Roberto Jimenez, a senior F Block teacher, regularly opens his room to students from all grade levels, even underclassmen who are not assigned to his block. He sees the period as an opportunity for connection and support beyond traditional instruction.

“I truly appreciate that F Block exists at our school, as it provides valuable space for a variety of school events and student activities that enrich our community,” Mr. Jimenez said. “That said, I believe our current policies restrict student movement more than necessary during this time. If a teacher is willing to host a student in their classroom, why impose barriers?”

According to Mr. Jimenez, the flexibility allows students to review for tests, catch up on assignments, or talk through challenges in a lower-pressure environment. He believes these interactions help students feel more connected and supported during a demanding school day.

Underclassmen often use F Block as a time to plan ahead. Junior Cecilia Urdaneta splits her F Block between academic support and future preparation. She frequently visits the math lab for extra help and uses the remaining time to research colleges and build her college list, as all juniors are preparing at this time of year.

“F Block helps me stay on track,” Cecilia said. “I go to the math lab to make sure I understand what we’re learning, and then I use the rest of the time to look at colleges and think about what I want after high school. It makes everything feel more manageable. Sometimes I do feel it’s a little useless though, like when I don’t have any work to do. I just sit there and watch movies; it gets tiring.”

For seniors, F Block often reflects the pressures of their final year. Senior Emma Angeli uses the period to balance schoolwork, extracurricular responsibilities, and the stress of waiting for college decisions. In addition to completing assignments, she attends SALTT meetings to help prepare for the upcoming fashion show, working on theme selection and planning with faculty advisors, like Mr. Tim Gamwell.

“F Block is when I try to stay productive while dealing with college decision stress,” Emma said. “I get my work done and go to SALTT meetings to help plan the fashion show. It keeps me busy and focused instead of just waiting and stressing.”

While F Block looks different for every student, its flexibility allows it to serve multiple purposes at once. Whether used for academic support, future planning, or extracurricular involvement, the block continues to shape how students manage both their responsibilities and their time.
