Camillus House is a nonprofit that has been serving the Miami community for over 60 years. Its mission to give back to the community and offer hope, help, second chances, and new beginnings for individuals and families facing poverty or homelessness. The organization began with a simple act of kindness when Brother Mathias Barrett gave a newly arrived Cuban exile a bowl of cereal. What began as a small gesture of compassion to one person in need, grew into a large nonprofit organization that is dedicated to serving those most in need in the Miami community.
Today, Camillus House offers a wide range of services like housing programs, treatment services, workforce development, and help with basic needs like hot meals, clean clothes, and daily showers. The organization also offers a Specialized Services Program that helps people facing difficult situations. This program supports victims of human trafficking as well as individuals with mental illnesses who have non-violent misdemeanor charges to assist them avoid jail. Camillus also hosts a program to assist veterans who end up on the streets find permanent housing. By providing both immediate help and long-term support, Camillus House gives people the tools and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives.
The true impact of these programs can be seen through the experiences of the individuals who have been helped by Camillus House.
With support from Camillus House’s ISPA program, he regained stability, received therapy and work training, and began rebuilding his life, now hoping to give back as a Peer-Support Specialist.
Kevin, a youth who faced homelessness and lacked a high school diploma, shared, “You see, I don’t quit. There are bumps on the road, but I won’t quit because I know Camillus House won’t quit on me either.”
With help from the Youth Housing Initiative and workforce programs, he earned his GED, completed vocational training, and is moving toward stable housing and independence.
Joseph, a client of the Day Center, said, “Elisa opened the door for me,” reflecting the personal care and guidance he received.
Through Camillus House, he transitioned from chronic homelessness to permanent housing and looks forward to a more stable life.
These stories highlight that Camillus House does more than meet immediate needs. It gives people the support, skills, and opportunities to regain control of their lives. With the help of its programs and the community, the organization helps individuals overcome challenges and move toward a more hopeful and independent future.
