Homecoming is an event many students look forward to each year, but before they get to enjoy the many activities offered, teachers spend weeks preparing by choosing themes to organize decorations, activities, much of the work behind the scenes.

This year’s homecoming dance will have an Olympic theme, bringing a sports-inspired atmosphere to the school-wide celebration. Each grade will also have its own theme. Seniors will represent Formula 1, juniors will portray the World Cup, sophomores will depict the Super Bowl, and freshmen will illustrate March Madness..

Although students are not involved in planning the event, they still have their own opinions about the themes and what they hope to see at the dance.

“I think the Olympic theme is really fun because there are so many different ways each grade can represent its sport,” said sophomore Hannah Lucas Tatis.

For the teachers in charge, creating the event requires more than simply choosing a theme. They must organize the different parts of the celebration and make sure everything is prepared before students arrive October 10th.

“There are a lot of details that students do not see, so we have to make sure everything is organized before the night of the dance,” said Ms. Adriana Arrieta, math teacher, and one of the Student Government advisers involved in the planning of Homecoming.

The Olympic theme gives students an opportunity to celebrate their grade while also being part of a larger school-wide event. Each class’s sports theme allows students to show their school spirit in a different way.

For seniors, the Formula 1 theme gives the Class of 2027 a chance to represent their final year of high school with a theme centered around speed and racing.

“I’m excited that seniors got Formula 1 because it’s different from the other themes and gives us a lot of ideas for what we can wear and how we can decorate. Plus, I love the theme because Formula 1 is my favorite sport,” said senior Micaela Tarazona.

Other students are looking forward to seeing how the different themes come together during the celebration.

“I’m mostly excited to see everyone’s outfits and decorations. It will be cool to see all four sports represented at the same dance,” said junior Daniella Leon.

As Homecoming approaches, teachers continue working on the details while students wait to see the finished event. What students experience on the night of the dance is only the final result of the preparation taking place behind the scenes.

With an Olympic theme, four different grade themes and weeks of preparation, this year’s Homecoming will bring students and teachers together for a week’s worth of school spirit and celebration.
