For many student-athletes at Immaculata-La Salle, staying healthy is just as important as practicing, competing and giving their best on game day. Behind many of those athletes is the Athletic Training Room, where students can receive treatment, learn about sports injuries, and get the support they need to keep doing what they love.
The Athletic Training Club, moderated by Ms. Camille Wilkerson, gives students an opportunity to become more involved with the athletic training program and learn more about the work that goes on behind the scenes. The club helps bring attention to the important role athletic trainers play in keeping ILS athletes safe and prepared.
Senior Sophia Salgado, President of the Athletic Training Club, has seen first-hand how valuable the program can be for students. As president, she hopes the club can encourage more students to become interested in athletic training and understand how much work goes into helping athletes recover.
The Athletic Training Room is used by athletes from many different teams, including football, cross country, and other ILS sports. For athletes who practice and compete throughout the week, having athletic trainers available can make a major difference.
Junior Alejandro Feria, a football player, is one of the many athletes who appreciates the support provided by the athletic trainers. With the physical demands of football, injuries and soreness can become part of an athlete’s season, making proper treatment especially important.
“I’m really grateful for our athletic trainers because they are always there when we need them,” Ale said. “They treat our injuries really well and make sure we are taken care of. It makes you feel supported knowing that someone is looking out for you.”
The Athletic Training Room is also an important resource for athletes in endurance sports. Junior Isabella Arbil, a cross country runner, frequently visits the room for treatment and understands how important recovery can be during a demanding season.
“As a cross country runner, I’m in the athletic training room pretty often, and the trainers are always willing to help,” Bella said. “Having a place where I can get treatment and take care of my body helps me stay focused on running and competing.”
While athletes may be the most frequent visitors to the Athletic Training Room, the Athletic Training Club offers students a chance to see the profession from a different perspective. Members can learn about injury prevention, treatment, recovery, and the responsibilities that come with working in sports medicine.
With Ms. Wilkerson guiding the club and students like Sophia Salgado helping lead it, the Athletic Training Club continues to provide an opportunity for ILS students to become more connected to the athletic community.
