Immaculata-La Salle High School is bringing the world in Dr. Seuss to life with its upcoming production of Seussical the Musical, running from Nov. 4-7. The musical follows Horton the Elephant, who discovers a tiny world called Whoville living on a speck of dust. Along with the Cat in the Hat and a young boy with a big imagination, the story brings together familiar characters while exploring friendship, kindness, and standing up for others. Unlike the original children’s book, the musical gives the audiences a chance to learn more about the characters and their personalities.
“I love Horton the Elephant. It was joy expecting to like him as much as I do. He has this beautiful naive nature that works really well because he is more reactive than proactive,” said junior Jayden Cabrera, who plays Horton.
The cast has spent about two months preparing for the production, working on everything from memorizing lines to perfecting musical performances. For some students, this has also been an opportunity to experience performing in a musical for the first time. The production features colorful costumes, group songs, and a storybook-inspired setting that brings the imaginative world of Dr. Seuss to the stage. Students have also worked together to make sure the music, acting and costumes come together the performances.
The musical will have four performances with shows Wednesday, Nov. 4, Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m.. The final performance will be on Saturday, Nov 7, at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for ILS students, $15 for non-ILS students ages 17 and under, and $20 for adults. VIP tickets are also available for $25 and include reserved front row seating. The cast hopes audiences leave with an important message about treating others with kindness and supporting people regardless of their differences.
“A key motif in Seussical is ‘a person’s a person, no matter how small’ and I believe that is a key takeaway for the audience. We should support and care for one another no matter how different we may seem,” Maddie added.
