Struck By The Sky

On a soccer field in 2019, multiple people suffered the effects of a lightning strike hitting the ground. Though they weren’t hit directly, the electrical current spread through the ground causing several players to collapse. Reportedly the sudden shock traveled through their legs within seconds. This incident was caused by a ground current that happens to be responsible most lightning injuries.

The Dangers During Storms

Ground currents are one of the most dangerous parts of lightning. You can’t see them coming.

Lightning can sometimes strike even 10+ miles away from a storm.

Bodies of water and the ground being wet spreads electricity farther through cities.

If it takes around 10 seconds for thunder to be heard, the lighting must be 2 - 3 miles away.

Why Does Miami Get So Much Lightning?

Moisture fuels Miami storms because it sits between two bodies of water, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

Sea breeze collisions between the Atlantic Ocean and inland air are the main trigger for storms.

Rapid thundercloud formations are due to summer heat and humidity.

South Florida happens to be part of “Lightning Alley”, the Central/South Florida hotspot for lightning.
