Being deep into the fall season, many can’t help but be obsessed with all things autumn including the colors brown and orange, pumpkin spice, and the phrase “Sweater Weather.”.The reasoning for this newfound popular phrase? TikTok and the rise of The Neighbourhood.

The Neighbourhood is an American rock band formed in Newbury Park, California in 2011 currently under Columbia Records. The band consists of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Alexander Fried.

Although they were formed in 2011, their first album didn’t come out until 2013. Their discography includes I Love You, Wiped Out!, Hard To Imagine The Neighbourhood Ever Changing, and more.

It was a sound of music that I had never really heard before, but that really intrigued me.

Recently, their work has increased in popularity due to the ever-growing social media platform, TikTok. Starting last year, their work has become a part of popular TikTok audios (especially in the Harry Potter and DracoTok communities). A few of their now popular  songs include the infamous “Sweater Weather,” “Daddy Issues,” “Afraid,” and more.

This goes to show that TikTok can be a helpful platform to businesses to gain more traction or for organizations to increase awareness about a topic.

Back to music, The Neighbourhood has recently released a new album in 2020 and thanks to the attention they’ve received on TikTok, their newest album is doing well.

Maybe the next time you hear the phrase “Sweater Weather,” you’ll think twice before assuming the conversation is simply using a cliché term.
