Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto tells the story of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called Encanto. Every child in the family is blessed with a special gift from the Encanto- from the power to heal to understanding animals when they speak. Everyone but Mirabel. She soon finds out that the magic of the Encanto is in trouble and decides she is the only one to save it.

“I thought it was okay and the music was enjoyable, but it doesn’t compete with any of my favorite Disney films,” said senior Mia Esparragoza.

As far as casting and character diversity is concerned, they stayed true to Hispanic culture and cast Maluma, Wilmer Valderrama, and asked Lin-Manuel Miranda to compose the music. Mirabel, who is played by Stephanie Beatriz, is the first female Disney protagonist to wear glasses.

In true Disney fashion, the movie is colorful and has fun and enjoyable music for the family to sing along, and a great message of family, belonging, and acceptance. It is a great movie to sit around the couch eating popcorn with the family, and, at any rate, a wonderful addition to Disney’s long list of animations. Watch now in theaters or stream on Disney + on December 24th.
