The 2022 version of the movie Scream is an adaptation and a type of different version of the original 1996 version, along with its three sequels. The difference between these two films is that the newer version has easily incorporated technological platforms and portrayed how frequently the media is used to communicate with one another. Conversations were held in platforms like Discord and Reddit. One very important thing to mentions is that this movie is directed towards more mature audiences. By this, I mean that I wouldn’t let my 12-year-old cousin watch it simply because it has twice the amount of gore as the last movie, an abundance of curse words, and a lot of violence. However, I do think that mature audiences will love this movie, well, only if they can handle that type of “intense” content.

What is this movie based on?

Well, just like the first movie, everything starts with a girl getting a mysterious phone call from a potential murderer. However, this time, the character is played by actress Jenna Ortega, Tara Carpenter in the movie. During the phone call, she starts playing a trivia game with a completely stranger and not long after, she’s attacked and stabbed. After that incident, her sister, Samantha, played by Melissa Barrera, went back to her hometown along with her boyfriend to take care of her. At this point, there was a murderer on the loose and they all wanted to see who it was before it was too late. Samantha and her boyfriend, Richie, look for help from others, so they contacted Dewey Riley, played by David Arquette. He was pretty much an expert at survival since he was retired, so with this, he helped and offered the rules of survival to Tara and her friends. However, something important that Mr. Dewey mentioned was that the killer could even be in that group of people. Not long after, Tara’s sister, Samantha brought her deepest, darkest secret to light, which had to do with the killings that were going on at the time. Instantaneously,  two very intelligent women, Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell and Gale Weathers, played by Courteney Cox, had high hopes of ending this killing spree once and for all.

What to expect:

Don’t worry; I won’t give any spoilers. Thankfully, the media has been keeping all the plot twists to themselves. Remember when Avengers Endgame came out and everyone started giving out spoilers about who died? Yeah, that’s not happening with Scream. One thing I will mention is that you will see a lot, a lot, of blood. So many scenes with gore and violence might be too intense for some audiences. There will also be a lot of surprising events occurring  that you probably aren’t expecting. If you have enjoyed the past Scream films, you will love the return of several characters. You will see a sister bond between Tara and a Samantha, as they grow together throughout the film and help each other out. The most important part was the killer reveal and the third big act. The climax and the occurring events weren’t predictable in my opinion, so I was definitely surprised with all the twists presented.

Overall thoughts:

Overall, Scream is a film with a mix of humor and horror. Wes Craven did not fail to perfectly combine these two genres by adding violence, but the right amount. So, if you enjoy movies with plots twists and shocks throughout them, then don’t walk, but run to the movie theater (or buy the movie online) and enjoy!
