What Would be your Speech at the Emmy’s?

The life of some actors involves a red carpet, flashing lights, and the possibility of receiving an award.  But what if, as a performer, one is tasked with delivering a speech?

The 74th annual Emmys presented September 12 by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded prime time American television programming. As you examine, the winners’ list, and look for new TV series and movies to watch, remember to take in the memorable quotes from the night that helped make this year’s ceremony so unforgettable.

  • OUTSTANDING LIMITED OR ANTHOLOGY SERIES 

WINNER: THE WHITE LOTUS 

The White Lotus is an American comedy drama, anthology television series featured on HBO that follows guests and employees of the fictional “White Lotus” resort chain in Hawaii, whose stay becomes affected by their various dysfunctions over the span of one highly transformative week. This show took home the most Emmys for the night.

A class satire on social climbing based on the exploits of social climbers has a long history in American popular culture, as well as the rotting core of class in America. It analyzes the world’s ingrained power structures in graphic detail, but it doesn’t think such structures can be altered; simply observed. Even if you strive to avoid the really affluent individuals, you will eventually find yourself in their presence.

  • BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES 

WINNER: ZENDAYA 

Zendaya becomes the youngest two-time Emmy winner in history with Euphoria. She marks herself as the first woman of color to win an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series twice. During her speech she made sure to thank those who got her to where she is, but also those who have shared with her rough and impacting stories that relate to the character she plays.

  • BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES 

WINNER: LEE JUNG-JAE

Lee Jung-Jae took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in Squid Game, recognized as the first Asian actor to win in this category. This show, as many may know, is an international hit worldwide and is Netflix’s most popular program. The charismatic actor played the blundering Seong Gi-hun,  in a competition that played with real life or death stakes for which the actor was praised for his acting in ways that emotionally connected with the audience.

  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY 

WINNER: SHERYL LEE RALPH 

Sheryl Lee Ralph was a supporting actress as a kindergarten teacher in Abbott Elementary who did not expect the win though she was prepared! Ralph’s win became one of the biggest highlights of the Emmy night in which she delivered an incredible, emotional, and inspiring speech which included singing a verse from jazz singer Diana Reeves’ 1993 song “Endangered Species.” The funny thing about this is that Ralph revealed that this speech had actually been in the work for years. She quotes, 


Although she may not have used these remarks during the awards ceremony, the backdrop is appreciative of her character. Even if they appear so far away, everyone is capable of realizing these ambitions. What would you say if you ever had a dream that required you to give a speech?
