On October 3rd, we had our first journalism day of 2022. It was also my first time going on a journalism field trip. It was on the FIU campus and it consisted of a number of different middle school and high school students walking around to participate in seminars regarding media classes. The day started off with guest speaker Mr. Jason Jackson, (a Miami Heat reporter), talking to us about his career and how he came about being a reporter. He made some very interesting points and it was informative to hear the perspective of someone well known in this industry speak about his experiences.

One of the things he said was that if you do not like group projects, don’t go into media which is always a group project! Another thing he recommended was working or interning now as opposed to waiting to do so when you are in college.

Overall, I was able to gather a lot of new knowledge and information from all the speakers during the seminars. I felt like it was a very pleasant experience which I would do it again.

The FIU campus is very big and a little hard to maneuver, (we got lost trying to find the Chick-fil-A), but it also gave me the feel of what it would be like to be a student there. Just walking through the campus and seeing the ambiance gives you a different perspective on what the school really has to offer. If you are interested in taking a college tour this is also a different way of doing it which I find even more interactive.

I loved all the different food options such as Sushi Maki, Panera Bread, Dunkin’ Donuts, etc. The staff were all very nice as well.  If you’ve never done a J day, I’d say go for it! You won’t regret it!
