The Immaculata-La Salle girls volleyball team has finished their fall season with many significant victories, including a District Championship, and a stronger bond than ever.

The Royal Lions had an overall record of 15-8 and there was never a moment where the girls weren’t fully committed to the court. Having lost to MAST Academy twice, they had an inspiring come up after applying all their hard-work and dedication on the court.

The girls won their final match against them with a soaring 3-1, which rewarded them the privilege and honor of winning the 2019 Girls Volleyball District Championship Tournament. They had to fight for this title, and they did so with everything they had in them; they gave it their all.

Junior Charlize Ramos is extremely proud of her teammates’ accomplishment and how far they have come from the beginning of the season.

“Our want, passion, and dedication won us the district champion title,” said Ramos.

The girls all improved tremendously, their stats being a reflection of their effort and maturation as a team.

Senior Madeline Cannata led the team with 225 kills this season. Senior Mikayla Sanchez-Torrelio followed close behind with 166 kills, and sophomore Helena Marquita registered 100 kills.

Junior Adriana Medina led the team with 63 serving aces, followed by Cannata with 58, and senior Isabella Falero with 44. Cannata and Falero both led their team with 78 digs, and sophomore Christina Blanco was next with 75.

The Royal Lions played a remarkable season, all of which couldn’t have been done without the seniors. Maria Cuesta believes that the senior girls were an asset to the team.

“Each senior had their own attribute that contributed greatly to the team; Bella is a consistent leader that can always be counted on, Mikayla is a positive force that completes whatever task is asked of her, Camila is the optimistic player that provides energy which is oftentimes missing from the game, Maddie is the aggressive force that challenges everyone on the team to be their best, and Andrea, although she didn’t play this year, did provide power in the few games she played,” said Ms. Cuesta.

“Each individual is extremely talented and will be greatly missed in the years to come. They set a bar for future generations to reach.”

The team hosted Cardinal Gibbons for the Regional Quarterfinal match, and unfortunately, that’s where their season ended. Gibbons, a highly ranked team in the state, won the game, despite the Lady Royals’ best efforts.

This was an incredibly successful season for the Lady Royal Lions varsity volleyball team, as they won the program’s first district championship since 2015. Although many important seniors will leave the team after graduation, there’s a solid young core who will return to defend that district title next year.
