DON’T FALL BEHIND! Read the Newspaper

Antonella Velasquez, Editor-in-Chief

Sometimes we overlook things that are right in front of us. Growing up, we overlook the importance of the First Amendment. Even though we were probably all sleeping during history class when they talked about the Bill of Rights, it is implemented every day in every single one of our lives. Something so simple as the ability to speak and express yourself freely sounds obvious, but it truly is a privilege.

Across the world, in countries like North Korea, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, and many countries in the Middle East, freedom of speech and press ARE not an readily accepted concepts.

But why is expression important?

Expressing yourself can help you keep in touch with how you are feeling. It can also help you release a lot of tension that you might be carrying around. Sometimes, when people lose touch with how they feel, their feelings burst out in situations or ways that are embarrassing or inappropriate. Expression is what makes a person and their personality. Being able to choose a religion, or a way to dress, or even an opinion on the smallest things, is what builds a human being. Free will, especially that expressed in the media is what keeps a country democratic.

For example, during elections in many Hispanic countries, speaking in any way that may criticize a certain political side’s reputation can be reason for jail time.

The press is meant to be used as the voice of the people. It’s used to put thoughts on paper and spread information that could cause an impact on people. The various forms of media – primarily television, newspapers and radio –  disseminate information.

Media like the news can carry current events of the world. Newspapers provide information and general knowledge. The media keeps you included in your community and the constant changes in society.

If you read the newspaper daily, you remain more informed and know more information regarding current events in the world. You can get more information regarding entertainment, the economy, and other sports events for the entire world. Thanks to newspapers, people are getting jobs and better educations all around the world.

Without Freedom of speech none of this would be possible. It is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction.

The world only moves forward and never looks back, and in the world we live in, with multiple sources of media, you either stay informed, or fall behind.
