At the beginning of the New Year while I was deciding what my  New Year’s resolution was going to be, I came across the idea of journaling once a day. After this idea came across my mind, I decided to do some research on why journaling once a day was even worth my time, and the benefits that I learned about got me excited to pick up this new hobby. Here are five main reasons why you should start journaling:

Improves Mental Health

Taking pen to paper reduces stress, helps manage anxiety and deal with depression.  “The act of taking pen to paper can help you relax, manage anxiety, cope with depression, (University of Rochester Medical Center, “Journaling for Mental Health”).

Helps with Achieving Goals

The physical act of writing down goals can help you feel more motivated to achieve those goals.

Enhances Critical Thinking and Creativity Skills

Writing in a journal is a good way to help channel your inner creativity.

Boost Memory

Research shows that writing helps boost memory since writing information down by hand is an effective way to commit ideas to memory.

Improves Physical Health

Reports say physical health outcomes of expressive writing have included improved liver function, and reduced blood pressure.

I started journaling January 5 and have not missed a day since. Once I started journaling, I felt a new sense of relief by writing down how I felt or thought that day. Everyday now I look forward to my ten-minute journaling session before bed. I hope that you too pick up this hobby and enjoy it!
