“What to do on Valentine’s Day when you’re single?” is a question many people ask when they feel lonely around this time of year.

February is the month of love because on this past Wednesday the 14th, was Valentine’s Day. Couples bombard each other with hearts, flowers, expensive gifts, candy or tell each other phrases like, “I love you” and “Be mine.” Some people are ecstatic about the holiday; others find it completely useless. This day should be celebrated everyday. Offer the ones you love, love everyday!

However, besides all the taken people who are in happy relationships, there are the single ones. Sometimes, not even single. They could be part of a situationship or in a complicated situation. Some just got cheated on and others have been single for their whole life. As a single person, there are so many fun things you can do without having to be in a relationship. While couples are out there going on dates, traveling or creating their own lives, make your own. You can definitely commemorate this holiday by loving your self.

Here are some fun activities you can consider for beyond Valentine’s Day and the month of February, when you might feel a little extra lonely.

Galentines Day is a great way to forget you’re single on February 14th. Spending time with your friends is also important! (New York Times)
  1. Gather with your friends. Spending time with people that have been with you through breakups, heartbreaks, thick and thin can be an easy escape from this day. Invite all your single friends to your house or go to dinner with them. Toast to your independence and embrace being single.
  2. Go to the spa. Call your favorites along, get a manicure (or pedicure, or both), get a facial, treat yourself.
  3. Write a letter to your future self and check on it next year around the same time. Writing to your future self can be therapeutic and can help you document your progress as an individual. Maybe this year you’ll say to your future self, “You’re alone on Valentine’s Day, but maybe next year you won’t be,” and you check the letter next year. Maybe you predicted your own future. It’s always fun to manifest the life you want with words of affirmation.
  4. Watch your comfort shows and movies. Sometimes resorting to watching those movies that make you feel safe is the best escape. Watch an old Disney movie, cheesy reality TV shows, or even a scary movie. Binge watch your favorite show or start a new one.
  5. Buy yourself flowers. You deserve to spoil yourself for Valentine’s Day. Buy yourself a bouquet of roses/flowers that no one has ever gotten you before.
  6. Go shopping. Going shopping can help you make yourself look good. When you look good, you feel good. Buy that dress you’ve been wanting for a long time, or that new makeup product that’s going viral on TikTok that you’re dying to try. Spend wisely, though.
  7. Listen to your favorite music. While some people are crying because they feel lonely on Valentine’s Day, play your favorite songs and distract yourself. Not everyone dreads Valentine’s Day! Make the best out of it when you’re single.

Being single is definitely not a big deal, even though people make it seem that way. You can be single by choice, going through a painful breakup, or even stuck in a relationship that’s confusing, to say the least, is fine. Make the best out of it and enjoy living a single life, on Valentine’s Day or any other day.

Celebrate yourself and celebrate on your own terms.
