This has been a tough year for the Boys’ Lacrosse as multiple injuries have taken a toll on the team. First, Michael Boza, the senior goalie, tore his meniscus. Then, Gavin Kuppers, the senior attack man, sprained his ankle in the first game. Starting junior Thomas Bussenius bruised his ribs. Sebastian Castro and Sebastian Antoine (Tiano) were out on back and elbow injuries. Lastly, Juanmartin Gomez dislocated his shoulder. It was a war of attrition soon to be lost. But that does not mean Lacrosse gave up. Every single person who was hurt tried his best to recover and play, despite getting beat up every game. That’s the character of the sport and it comes down to who wants it more no matter how tired.

Since a lot of the starting lineup got hurt, many freshmen got to play, and they excelled. Andrew Mitchell, who just joined Lacrosse this year, has seen some of the most playing time as a freshman, and has learned, improving from each game.

Against Coral Shores last Wednesday, the team knew it was solid. Though the opponents were fast, and it was going to be a tough game, there wasn’t a single moment anyone from ILS we gave up to let Coral Shores just run through. ILS played through each injury and kept up heads against Coral Shores’ massive defenseman, who, was at least 200 pounds and 6’3″. He had gotten the ball and charged up the field to the goal. Defenseman and team captain Lucas Brena put his body on the line and charged straight into the oncoming wall of mass. He did this without hesitation because he knew he had to stop the shot to give the ILS goalie a chance of blocking it. It was the last play in a tough loss.

The final game is this Monday against Florida Christian. It is will be Senior Night as the team puts forth their last effort. Some of the seniors have been on the team for multiple years, yet for others, this is their first. They lead the team and keep pushing everyone in practice. So, expect a hard game where everyone plans on giving it their all.
