The glow of streaming screens has replaced cinema projectors, living rooms have become the new theaters, the scent of buttered popcorn is but a distant memory and websites/apps are receiving more subscriptions. Movie theaters have raised their prices leading them to lose their popularity with more people wanting to stay at home.
Here is some feedback from ILS students on why movie theaters aren’t what they used to be:
“Going to the movies is too expensive, it’s boring, and you can just get movies online now,” said senior Nicholas Dominguez.
Everyone has their own opinion but the most common thing amongst all is that prices are way too high. Driving long distances, the cost of gas, wasting money on a ticket, and overpriced snacks lead many to conclude they can do all the same things at home for less.
If this is so, then when and why do we go?
“If a new movie is coming out, and I can’t get access to it, and all my friends are going, then I’ll go,” said senior Stetsen Angelo.
“I barely ever go but when I do it is normally for an iconic movie. A movie like Top Gun can’t just be watched at home. It’s not the same experience as going to the movie theaters and hearing everyone booing or clapping. The sound effects, everything, are just different,” said senior Maria Arena.
“When a big movie is coming out, it can be fun to go with friends and it is also a chance to get out of the house,” said senior Mariana Castillo.
With streaming taking over, movie theaters are losing their charm. High prices and the comfort of home have shifted the scene. Students like Nicholas find it too pricey, while others, like Stetsen, go for big releases with friends. Maria values the unique theater vibe for iconic movies, but Mariana enjoys the occasional outing for a chance to get out of the house.
In a world of rising home comfort, the flicker of movie theater lights may be fading, but the occasional outing still holds a touch of cinematic magic for those seeking a different kind of experience.
