This is the senior’s last year of all sports they’ve ever played at Immaculata-La Salle. For these seniors, this isn’t just another season; it’s the peak of years of dedication. ILS’s cross-country program has been their training ground and arena for victories as well as personal growth. And now, as they lace up their running shoes for the last time, they’re ready to leave their mark on the course, their teammates, and the legacy for the school. Three seniors recapped their cross-country season over the years. Senior, Carlos Aldecoa, who just transferred, but has been running cross-country throughout the years. His goal this year, before the season ends, is to break his 19.07-minute time for the 5k. During his first year here, he mentioned that the team is very united, everyone is motivated and works together, and with that, the coaches are really good. Carlos does track.
“It’s a way to unwind; you release everything and kind of forget about everything.”
Senior Mariam Osman has been a committed player for all four years. Her goal this senior year is to make states this year and break her 2.35 minutes in the 800. She also mentions Coach Shaheen and says how amazing of a coach he is; she says he is tough but he also gives breaks.
“I’m sad this is my last year since I feel like it is just starting to click and I have so much more to give.”
At first, Mariam used to not like running but now she uses it to reflect and get a breath of fresh air. Mariam loves to see her own progression over the years and says mentally running clears her head and makes her feel better.
Lastly, Senior Lia Broder is also sad it is her last year on the team after spending four years on it. She recalls the seniors leaving and how sad it was on her and now to be in their position the time went by so quickly. Lia runs because it brings her comfort and strength. She thinks about her pace and not to waste any energy.
“A lot of things go on in my head but my top thought is making sure I don’t run out of breath.”
