Would You Buy an Octobuddy?

Sorry, there was an error loading this poll.

When first reading the name, you would automatically try breaking it down, and maybe think of something relating to the ocean, a stuffed animal, a kid’s toy, etc. Well, it is none of those things.

An Octobuddy is a cellphone case accessory that allows you to stick your cellphone to smooth surfaces, giving you the ability to record hands-free and watch things while having your phone mounted. It is small, affordable, leaves no damage to phone cases, and features mini suction cups just like an octopus’ tentacles. That’s where “octo” comes in because it relates to the similar appearance and effect of an octopus’s tentacles.

As most trends nowadays start, it was all because of TikTok. Recently, this sticky little tool went viral due to its cheap cost, great advertising, and since it literally sticks to your phone, it doesn’t take up any space.

It started with influencers propping their phones up in random places, posting their phone case with this weird-looking thing, explaining what it is and how convenient it is and boom, everyone started having one even if they weren’t influencers.

If you are anything like me and you like to see what the hype is all about, especially if it’s cheap, you buy it. And of course, that is exactly what I did.

It has its pros and cons; Just like most things you buy, the first few weeks or months, it’s awesome. You rave about it, but then it ends up being in a box or somewhere in your house and you never look back.

Don’t get me wrong, Octobuddies are cool, but really if you’re not an influencer it is kinda of pointless. I enjoyed being able to mount it in weird places and occasionally record a TikTok with it, but guess what? It sticks to everything, and I mean EVERYTHING.

After a few weeks, I was over having to pull my phone off of everything, leaving little circle marks everywhere and the best part is I bought two. I thought instead of buying one and having to stick it to my phone case and then leaving the sticky residue, let me buy two and stick them together, then have the suction stick to my phone. But it got old very fast.

Maybe I would have a different opinion if I was a content creator, but I’m not. Now it sits somewhere in my room collecting dust but shout out to the found Michael Ark because it is a super cool gadget and I believe it is effective for most since nowadays everyone does TikToks.

Everyone has their own opinions so here are a few from students:

“When I first heard about Octobuddy it was through TikTok and the name alone caught my eye. But when I started looking into it, I was debating whether or not I should buy it. Then, I did and I honestly don’t regret it,” said senior Emilie Reyes.

“I had no idea what it was until I came to school and I started seeing a bunch of people, including my own friends, sticking their phones to everything and I would try to catch their phones thinking it would fall but they wouldn’t. I personally never bought one because the concept to me was cool, but sticking to everything didn’t fascinate me,” said senior Camilla Souza.

“As a guy, I would never buy one but honestly when I come across someone who has one, it’s fun to play with it but I do get annoyed of the sticking and unsticking sound of it and the little circle marks it leaves behind,” said senior Nicholas Dominguez.

This could be your sign to try it out or not, but in my opinion, this is truly just another passing trend.
