Most of us have heard the phrase “girl math” before. But what does it mean?

“Girl Math” is a trending phrase seen on many social media platforms. It’s used to justify the habit of unnecessary and even excessive purchases. It’s bad math meant to be taken in a funny way. It can be applied to everyone, but it’s mainly used by girls.

“Girl Math is used to justify almost anything related to money. It can be as simple as buying clothes that are on sale to buying expensive items because they are investments,” added sophomore Amelie Terry

Here are some examples:

  1. If something is paid for in case, then it’s free
  2. If you place a Starbucks order with your Starbucks app that you had previously reloaded, then it’s free
  3. If something is bought at a store and later returned, then you’re actually making money
  4. If you don’t spend money today, then your budget for the next day doubles
  5. If you go out to dinner with friends and you pay the bill, but later your friends send you the money for their portion, then you are actually making money

“My favorite example of girl math is if I buy something with cash, but I end up not spending all of it, then whatever I buy with that leftover money is free,” added junior Daniella Coro.

The list of examples goes on and on, but the idea stays the same.

This concept of “girl math” is not well understood by everybody, mainly guys. Trying to explain it to them can sometimes be hilarious. Junior Joaquin Martinelli is an example of many.
