Astronomers have confirmed the presence of a second “moon” orbiting Earth. This moon, which is now nicknamed “minimoon” because of its size, has surprised many avid stargazers, causing excitement and curiosity worldwide. This “moon,” which is actually an Arjuna asteroid, is a small celestial body that occasionally comes close enough to Earth to be rarely captured by its gravity. The asteroid is currently orbiting Earth temporarily and is expected to remain here for only several months. Then it will return back to its asteroid belt since initially being discovered on September 29.
“This situation almost seems fake because of how crazy it is.” said sophomore Kristina Sardings.
While the asteroid is approximately 40 meters in diameter and not visible to the naked eye, astronomers have confirmed its presence using very advanced telescopes. Its existence near Earth has raised talk and suspicion about possible meteorite activity. The importance of studying space objects like these, according to the scientific community, is for their scientific value and potential impact on Earth.
“We are very close to meteorites,” said LTV teacher Mr. Omar Gutierrez.
Although the Arjuna asteroid doesn’t appear like the full moon in the night sky, its temporary presence as a second moon orbiting Earth has captured the imagination of many students and teachers. Some astronomers are stating that the second moon can be now seen in India. The Arjuna asteroid coming from the Arjuna asteroid belt is made up of space rocks that follow orbits similar to that of Earth.
Scientists finally predicted that the asteroid will soon eventually leave Earth’s orbit due to the sun’s gravitational pull, making this a rare and short-lived phenomenon. For now, it remains a mysterious and interesting dynamic in the world, an unpredictable cause of nature from the solar system, inspiring many worldwide to look to the stars.
