In recent years, kangaroo sightings have surprised Floridians, sparking curiosity and questions about the potential risks posed by these exotic animals. It sounds crazy, but a few people here actually keep kangaroos as pets. And every once in a while, one of them escapes and starts hopping around neighborhoods, amazing everyone.
Are Kangaroos Dangerous?
Kangaroos usually look friendly, but they can actually be pretty tough. If they feel threatened, they might kick or scratch to defend themselves. They have powerful legs and sharp claws, so getting too close to one could be risky. Wildlife experts say it’s best to stay back and call animal control if you see a loose kangaroo. While they’re not out to hurt anyone, they’re still wild animals and could be dangerous if scared.
“When I went to Australia, I saw this kangaroo on a field and the kangaroo was HUGE! I thought it would be small like in cartoons, but it was taller than my dad,” said senior Natalie Islami.
How did Kangaroos end up in Florida?
Kangaroos end up in Florida for a variety of reasons, including escaping from captivity or being owned by a resident. Kangaroos can escape from their enclosures due to a number of reasons, including a bear entering the enclosure. For example, in October 2024, a kangaroo escaped its enclosure in Pierson, Florida after a bear entered it. The kangaroo was spotted hopping down the road, across an intersection, and at the sheriff’s youth camp. The kangaroo was eventually captured and returned to its owner.
“I’ve only seen a kangaroo when I went to Australia in 2012 in a zoo. I was with my cousin, and my cousin started climbing onto the fence the kangaroo was in and started going near the kangaroo mom’s eggs. Then my cousins mom yelled at him and had to grab him and pull him out,” said senior Joaquin Martinelli.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials recommend keeping a safe distance from any loose kangaroo and immediately contacting animal control.
“I’ve only ever seen a kangaroo at the Miami Zoo. They are very cool, and, if I ever go to Australia, I hope I see one,” said sophomore Sofia Cruces.
In Florida kangaroos are real, and while they’re usually not a threat, it’s smart to be careful if you ever spot one nearby!
