In celebration of National STEAM day, students had the opportunity to show their creativity during the STEAM playground last Tuesday.
According to National Calendar Day, (nationalcalendarday.com) STEAM is important because…..
- S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. is all around and shapes everyday experiences.
- Of the U.S. Labor Department’s predicted 10 fastest growing occupations, nearly all of them are S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. careers; therefore an interest in S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. early on can lead to success later on in life.
- The U.S. has fallen behind other nations in science and math education which means it is necessary to motivate young kids to pursue these subjects to keep up with the rest of the world.
- To close the gender gap that exists in S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. related-careers and build interest in girls is critical to their future earning potential.
“I participated in the STEAM playground last Tuesday and it was really a fun experience. My favorite part was probably learning how to perform CPR. Some other fun activities that I enjoyed were the live picture editing, and seeing skin tissue under a microscope,” said sophomore Maria Nordholz.
Those who ventured to the SLC during their F-Block were able to participate in a variety of activities while collaborating with their peers. Participants agreed it was a fun experience where they got to explore science, engineering, math, and art.
Students also had the chance to explore a variety of career-building activities, from dusting crime scenes for fingerprints to editing live photos using Photoshop, and even learning the life-saving skill of CPR, there were countless areas interested students could visit and interact with on that day. In the medical area of the playground, students identified tissue types under microscopes and learned how to properly care for athletic injuries. For those with an interest in business, a fun and friendly product pitch competition offered an engaging way to test their business abilities. No matter field any student is into, there was something at the STEAM playground for everyone.
“I went with my friend and stuck with her there. It was really enjoyable to see the medical activities since I’m thinking of becoming a doctor one day. I also really enjoyed learning how to perform CPR because I think it’s important to know how to do that. If I plan on becoming a medical professional, knowing CPR is essential. I’m glad and grateful they taught us this life-saving procedure,” said sophomore Camila Echeverri.
