The Environmental Club is an organization led by students who come together to raise awareness on protecting and improving planet Earth. Not only do they raise awareness, but they also take action. They do it by organizing beach cleanups, cleanups during F-block, and the kayak cleanups which take place on the Bay.
”The Environmental club helps ensure that our future will not have us swallowing down plastic for food or inhale polluted air,” said sophomore Teresa Kurishingal.
During the kayak cleanups, cleanups during F-block, or beach cleanups, members find all sorts of odd objects. Most people typically think that the trash consists of the usual stuff like plastic water bottles, food wrappers, and forks, which are also found, but the other things found can range from a hairbrush, to a head-sized speaker.
“The Environmental Club contributes to the environment and community by making our surroundings and the Earth cleaner through our cleanups,” said sophomore Eva Dusvitch.
Not only does contributing to the club help out majorly, but it also provides essential skills that everybody should have. These essential skills include waste management, sustainable consumerism, and maintainable food choices.
Why is Waste Management Important?
It has a significance because when waste is improperly handled or left out in the open, it becomes a breeding ground for disease-causing bacteria, pests, and rodents.
“Recycling and throwing trash away properly helps keep the planet clean, saves energy, and makes sure we don’t run out of resources later,” said sophomore Ethan Cordisco.
Why is Sustainable Consumerism Important?
This skill is important because by choosing items that are reusable, repairable, or recyclable it reduces waste, the need for new raw items and keeps materials in use for longer.
Why are Maintainable Food Choices Important?
Maintainable food choices have more of an influence than you think because they improve personal health by focusing on nutritious, whole foods while at the same time reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.
