Healthcare is one of the strongest sectors of the economy in the United States with over 17% of the Gross Domestic Product going towards this field as every year this number grows. Besides job security, people who work in healthcare—particularly in positions where they have direct contact with treating patients—report high levels of personal satisfaction with the jobs they perform. Many in the field have the privilege of seeing patients in their care as they deliver babies, grow into strong adults, and recover from illnesses. The healthcare field encompasses many professions all with the goal of improving the length and quality of human life.
“As a HOSA student, I’ve competed in the sports medicine and health and wellness competitions. Although challenging, it’s a good way to put my skills to the test, literally too, ” said senior Gianna Cusano.
ILS has joined in a forward-looking national trend to prepare students at the high school level for careers in healthcare by participating in the Health Occupations Students of America program, or HOSA for short. Students who are on this track follow a curriculum that focuses on the biological sciences and all things relevant to healthcare in its many forms.
HOSA’s dual model focuses on classroom learning as well as competitions with other schools that spur students to learn as much as they can in this rapidly changing field.
“I’ve always liked how HOSA also does service for the community. I feel that it really does make a difference in the world,” Gianna added.
HOSA also has a strong community service component, hosting blood drives and donation drives for hospitalized children.
Although many students do not know much HOSA, they are on a campus which actively exposes those interested in following a health-related career.
