In a world where many children endure abuse, neglect, and trauma, the Miami-based nonprofit organization Little Bear Big Heart is making a profound difference by offering comfort through the simple yet powerful gift of a teddy bear. Founded in honor of Michele Gillen, a renowned South Florida investigative reporter, the organization carries on her legacy of compassion, dedication, and service to vulnerable children.
The mission of Little Bear Big Heart is to raise awareness and educate the public about the vital importance of offering comfort to abused, neglected, abandoned, traumatized, and trafficked children. By ensuring that first responders, such as family court judges, police officers, and firefighters, are equipped with these comforting bears, the organization aims to provide emotional support to children during some of the most distressing moments of their lives. As President Addy Villanueva puts it, “These bears are specially made to soak up tears and give warm hugs.”
In February 2022, Little Bear Big Heart made its first major donation of 100 teddy bears to the Miami-Dade Police Department. This marked the beginning of a broader effort to make sure that first responders have the tools they need to provide immediate comfort to children in traumatic situations.
Miami-Dade Police Department Chief Brian L. Rafty expressed his gratitude, saying, “Having these bears in our patrol cars allows us to offer immediate comfort to children during some of their most challenging moments.”
While the organization’s efforts are rooted in local initiatives, their reach extends internationally as well. Through their volunteer causes, Little Bear Big Heart has made strides in empowering children in Ghana, providing resources and support to ensure that children worldwide feel the warmth and comfort of a teddy bear’s embrace.
Volunteers, known as Ambassadors, play a crucial role in the organization’s mission. These dedicated individuals help distribute bears, organize events, and spread awareness about the cause. Vice President Nina Villanueva highlights the importance of community involvement: “Our Ambassadors are the heart of our organization. Their passion and dedication allow us to reach more children in need.”
