President Donald Trump has suggested running for a third term, but according to the 22nd Amendment, he is prohibited from doing so. Some legal experts have been thinking about ways to work around Amendment 22, as only in unusual circumstances will they be able to circumvent it.
Even in those unusual circumstances, changing the constitution from the current two-term limit would be exceedingly difficult to achieve because it would need either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds vote of the individual states to agree.
“I don’t think that Trump should go for a third term because the whole purpose of the two-term limit was so that one person wouldn’t be able to hold too much power for too long,” said sophomore Isabella Limardo.
Nonetheless, despite the naysayers and the pushback, the president has said there are ways for him to run for a third term, without violating the 22nd Amendment.
One of the methods for running a third term is Vice President JD Vance taking the role as president, while Mr. Trump assumes the of Vice President.
President Trump has been asked for other ways to accomplish this, yet he has delivered a clear “no” to answering the question. He argues that many of his supporters want him to do it, but he first wants to mainly focus on his current term.
“I don’t really mind if he does. I just think that there is no chance that he is going to be able to run a third term,” said sophomore Eva Dusvitch.
Mr. Trump has previously commented on running for a third term before, but most members of his Republican Party took it as a joke.
In an interview with News Nation, President Trump ally Steve Bannon said he believes the former will “run and win again in 2028.” He also mentioned that he thinks there will be different ways for how Mr. Trump might pursue a third term, even though the Constitution limits presidents to two terms.
“He shouldn’t run a third term and there is no way to anyway,” said sophomore Valentina Bustos.
Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, introduced a resolution to extend presidential term limits, which, if it passed, would make it possible for President Trump to run for another term.
