Personality is the way a person usually thinks, feels, and acts. It is what makes you yourself. Everyone has a unique personality, but it tends to stay mostly the same over time as a person develops as demonstrated by studies in developmental psychology.
Personalities tend to develop over their experiences within their lifetime.
THE BIG FIVE
Personalities have this thing called the Big Five. What that is are five main traits that help people describe how they behave. The list is as follows: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
Openness means you like trying new things and thinking about different ideas.
Conscientiousness means being organized and responsible.
Extraversion is when you are social and like being around people.
Agreeableness means being kind and easy to get along well with.
Neuroticism means you might get stressed or agitated more easily.
Although it does not seem like it (genetics) play a factor in someone’s personality it does. Parts of our personality are inherited from our parents through our genes. This means that the way we naturally tend to act, feel, or think is being influenced by biological makeup. Our genes influence how our brains and bodies develop which causes parts of our parents personalities to slip through.
Sophomore Gianluca Rua said ” People do say I’m al ot like my parents so that explains it.”
While genetics play a part in your personality, that is not the whole picture. BOTH genetics and past experience influence and develop personalities.
Genetics also play a role in mental health. People who suffer from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia can directly trace their ailment genetically to someone in their family.
Sophomore Nicholas De Izaguirre said, “I find it really interesting that that affects that.”
