At Immaculata-La Salle, Student Government (SGA) is more then just coordinating school dances. By organizing pep rallies to voicing concerns about issues affecting students, SGA plays a significant role in school spirit and student life. Made up of representatives who are elected from every grade level, SGA consists of occupations like president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and more. They try to make sure that the student voice is heard and create activities that bring the student body together.
“People think we just plan events, but there’s so much more that goes into it,” said sophomore class president Claudia Marin.
“We listen to students’ concerns and try to bring their ideas to the administration. It is really about making the school better for everyone,” she said.
This year, SGA has been involved in adding new clubs, raising money for great causes, planning Homecoming week and much more. They also serve as a bridge between students and teachers, making sure student voices are heard.
SGA not only benefit others but is also a great learning experience for those participating.
Members agree that the group builds leadership skills that will last long after high school.
“Student government teaches responsibility and teamwork,” said sophomore class vice president Sabrina Lucas.
“We students are learning how to represent others and take initiative,” she added.
For many, the biggest impact comes from the sense of connection student government builds. Pep rallies, charity drives, and spirit weeks may seem small, but they bring students together in a way that makes school more than just classes.
“Getting to see our classmates organize events makes school more enjoyable and it’s nice to know that we students have a voice in what happens at the school behind the scenes,” said junior Valeria Rojas.
While planning dances will always be a fun part of their job, student government is proving that their role is much bigger. They are leaders, organizers, and advocates — showing that behind every event is a group of students dedicated to making their school a better place.
