The ILS Cross Country team has been around for many years and remains one of the school’s biggest sports programs, with several students lining up to take part in the team annually. They have had sensational seasons in recent history and show no signs of stopping. Head Coach, Mr. Andrew Shaheen, builds strength, courage, and confidence into the runners, and always brings out the best in them.
Coach Shaheen recently said that his expectation for the team this year for the boys and girls is to make it to the regional championships. Last year, the girls excellently made it, but unfortunately, the boys fell short. They will be looking to redeem themselves for this year’s season.
The runners share a similar goal as well. Andrew Brito, a sophomore and also a member of SALTT is optimistic.
“My expectation is to qualify to for the regional championships and then to states. My personal goal is to go under 17 minutes for a 5k,” he said.
Benjamin Pieri, a tenth grader as well and a member of the ILS band, said he wants to focus on his growth as a person as well as a runner.
“My expectation for the team is to win first place in districts. My personal goal is to be responsible and try my best to push myself to the limit,” he explained.
Sophomore Felipe Garcia, sharing similar opinions as the previous runners, also has ambitious goals.
“My personal expectation for this year is to hit sub 18 minutes for the 5k, and my expectation for the team is to reach states,” he said.
Recently, the XC team started off this season at the Palmer Trinity Invitational. Today, September 11, the team has a meet at Tropical Park, so make sure to go support your runners!
