The Ballon D’or is an annual soccer award crowning the best player of the year for both men and women, as well as other awards. It took place September 22, in Paris, France. The male winner of the award was presented to PSG and France superstar Ousmane Dembele, for racking up countless goals and for his success in the champions’ league and winning domestic trophies. The female award was given to Aitana Bonmati who is a forward for Barcelona and the Spanish national team. She also made history for being the first woman to win three consecutive Ballon D’ors, and only the third player ever to do so (Lionel Messi and Michel Platini being the other two).
However, just like any award ceremony, there will always be some controversy. For one, many fans believe Ousmane Dembele wasn’t the true winner and it should’ve been young star Lamine Yamal for achieving incredible feats as only a teenager.
Sophomore Samuel Armas doesn’t believe this, and he thinks Dembele was the fair winner.
“Dembele should’ve won because of all of his stats and the trophies he won,” Samuel said.
Other fans believe it should’ve been Brazilian forward Raphinha or Egyptian premier league winner Mohammed Salah. There are many fans, however, that believe Raphinha shouldn’t have won, but not finish 5th place, a moment that shocked the soccer world.
Another sophomore, Luca Drago, believes this.
“Me personally I think the Ballon D’or winner should have been Dembele, but Raphinha being 5th is a robbery. He should have been 2nd because he had a way better season then everyone in front of him,” he said.
Sophomore Michael Lopez has an unpopular take for the ceremony.
“I think Ronaldo is the fair winner because of his 50 goal contributions this season,” he said.
Other notable awards given that night were the Lev Yashin award for best goalkeeper to Gianluigi Donnarumma, men’s club of the year to PSG and Arsenal for women’s, and Kopa trophy for best under-21 player to Lamine Yamal.
