Football: Royals Capture First District Title Since 1976 with Dominant Win Over Miami Springs
For the first time in 49 years, the Immaculata-La Salle Royals are district champions. The Royals secured the 2A-15 title in emphatic fashion Friday night, rolling past Miami Springs 49–12.
Quarterback Nate Merrell Jr. led the charge through the air and on the ground, completing 7 of 13 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a 61-yard rushing score. The ground game was unstoppable, paced by Adrian Cox, who tallied 103 yards and 4 touchdowns on 15 carries. Merrell’s long touchdown run and a balanced effort from the backfield helped the Royals pile up over 270 rushing yards on the night.
Through the air, Tavarus Jones made the highlight reel with a 51-yard touchdown grab, while Jayden Noel added another receiving score. Torrence Jones, Wendell Copeland, Kamari Vasquez, and Jayvion Robinson all contributed key receptions to keep drives alive and the offense rolling.
The Royals’ offense exploded for nearly 500 total yards, and the defense stood tall, holding Miami Springs to just 12 points while forcing multiple turnovers and creating opportunities for the offense to capitalize. Defense was led by Ian Destinobles with 7 solo tackles and 1 sack, Philip Jones Jr had 4 tackles and 2 sacks, Daniel Marin added 1 sack and 3 tackles while Raul Alvarez added 2 sacks and 4 tackles.
With the 49–12 victory, Immaculata-La Salle not only improved its record but also etched its name back into the history books capturing its first district championship since 1976. The Royals now turn their focus to finishing the regular season strong and preparing for a deep playoff run.
District Championship secures the Royals a playoff seat along with a home playoff game (unless first round opponent is higher ranked district champion).
