As Thanksgiving comes around the corner, there are many things to think about. Who is making the turkey? Where should everyone go for the break? But something most probably don’t think about is whether we there will even be a Thanksgiving meal.
“Wishbone embodies the Salesian spirit of La Salle, uniting our community in gratitude and service to those most in need,” said English teacher Ms. Rose Lynch, describing the annual drive sponsored by the National Honor Society.
Unfortunately, for many families here in Miami there is something to worry about, especially those who endure food insecurity. The ILS community steps in each year to do their small part through the Wishbone Project.
“The Wishbone Project reminds us that generosity has the power to nourish both bodies and hearts. When students give their time to fill a box, they help create a brighter Thanksgiving for an entire family. The project shows how powerful a community can be when we come together to feed families in need. Each box becomes more than food – it becomes a gift of dignity, hope, and Thanksgiving joy,” said NHS advisor, science teacher, and Wishbone Project lead, Mrs. Rebecca Zlatkin.
There are mainly two reasons the ILS community should participate.
The first is to help a family in need as many of these families can’t afford groceries let alone a whole Thanksgiving meal. By giving to these families a box filled with all the goodies anyone would expect this time of year, donors can make a small yet meaningful impact. The second reason to give is that for students there is an immediate incentive of receiving service hours. For each box, students earn three hours. Ambitious and generous students may earn up to eight hours if they donate two boxes and include a $20 grocery store gift card.
Participants have already picked up boxes from the cafeteria which features the required list of items, done the shopping, and returned the boxes with everything inside.
