A catastrophic fire and a series of powerful explosions ripped through the Spegazzini Industrial Park in Ezeiza, Argentina, on the morning of November 14. The industrial disaster, which left over 20 people injured and caused extensive damage, has now centered investigators’ attention squarely on the chemical and plastics plants within the complex.
The event’s progression suggests a failure in hazard containment. The incident began with an initial blaze in a warehouse containing combustible materials. Crucially, the fire’s rapid escalation culminated in a massive explosion that breached the neighboring facilities, immediately involving the chemical and plastics operations. This led to a dangerous chain reaction, where stored chemicals likely fueled the ensuing conflagration and triggered multiple secondary, more powerful blasts.
The injured, primarily industrial workers, sustained injuries ranging from cuts from shattered glass to superficial burns. Their accounts, along with forensic evidence, will be critical to the ongoing probe. Specialized hazardous materials units (HAZMAT) were instrumental in both fighting the blaze and initiating the first phase of the investigation.

”It’s a very devastating accident, and I just hope that people can learn from mistakes like these,” said Sofia Toffalo Akil, a student whose parents are Argentinian.
Safety Protocols: Reviewing the park’s and the individual plants’ emergency response procedures, including sprinkler systems, firewalls, and employee training. Any failure in these safety barriers may have allowed the initial fire to spread uncontrollably to the highly volatile chemical areas.
The disaster also severely disrupted operations at the nearby Ministro Pistarini International Airport, leading to flight diversions.
